Concrete Jungle!

“These streets will make you feel brand new these lights will inspire you! Let’s hear for New York!”

Today marks one year since I took a leap of faith and moved to New York City!!! And, let me tell you, it’s by far the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Ever since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of living in New York City! I would imagine myself getting out of a cab and twirling in the street like Marry Poppins! The glitz and glamour depicted in the movies will have you fooled, hoodwinked & bamboozled! But, I soon learned that its the hidden glitz and glam that is the most rewarding.  On September 10, 2013 I packed three large bags and boarded a one way flight to what would become my home. I didn’t tell a soul! (Well of course my Mom knew.) But the rest of the world learned of the news on Social Media! (Awful I know)  I kept my big move to myself because it was very personal for me, and sometimes when you share your plans with people, they have an effect, be it negative or positive on the outcome.

This was my decision that would impact my life, and I wanted to do it for me. I am a firm believer in “Going Confidently in the Direction of your Dreams.” But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared. Excitement, nervousness, and a bit of fear were just a few of the emotions that consumed me, but I knew I had to do this.  Quickly after my arrival I found myself homeless, yes HOMELESS! For three nights I did not have a secure place to lay my head. I remember thinking to myself, “Who are you, and what have you done?!” How did the girl who always had a plan, and always made good decisions end up in this situation?  Those were the scariest three days I’ve lived through. I think I cried more within those 72 hours than I have in my entire life. As I reflect on that time, I realize that I am stronger than I ever knew, or even understood.

So you ask was it worth it? ABSOULOTELY! New York is a world of its own. I know it sounds so cliché, but the opportunities here are endless! Within a week I landed a job and my life has never been the same. Everyone has dreams of the big city, and it’s true what they say. “If you can make here, you can make it anywhere!”

The greatest thing that living in New York has taught me is that “Comfort is the Enemy” of Achievement.” When setting out to accomplish new heights, you sometimes have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. It forces you to adapt, and make thing happens. This city and I have a love hate relationship, but I’m forever appreciative of the lessons it has taught, the relationships I’ve built and the experiences I’ve been exposed to. Over the past year, I’ve learned so much about myself. I’ve grown tremendously as a person, and I love who I am becoming. Most importantly I am proud of myself! I can look back and say “Yeah, I did that!” I think it’s safe to say this is one of the best things that has ever happened to me!

For my NewYorkaversary shoot, I decided to wear a dress that is a reflection of everything that New York City is!  Bold, vibrant, colorful and loud infused with stylish detail & a flattering fit!
